Thursday Throwbacks: Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz - "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)"

"Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" was my shit back in 1998.  I would pump this almost everyday before basketball.  It's just one of those tracks that gets you fired up no matter what kind of mood your in.  I haven't heard this track in awhile but it doesn't even sound that dated.  This would still be solid if it was released today.

The song was released in December of 1997 and then climbed up the charts to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the early part of 1998.  This was Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz' only hit and they never released a follow up album after their debut Make it Reign.

You might recognize the intro of since it was used by Wyclef on Shakira's huge hit "Hips Don't Lie".  It's actually kind of messed up now that I see the video for 'Deja Vu" since Wyclef was in the intro there as well.  Dude totally jacked the sample!  I guess he took it to the next level though because that song was HUGE back in 2006.

The sample on both songs is from Jerry Rivera's "Amores Como El Nuestro".

The rest of "Deja Vu" samples Steely Dan's "Black Cow". I usually can't stand Steely Dan but I'm actually kind of feeling this.  That's some smooth shit.

Peter Gunz' son, Cory Gunz is an up and coming rapper who is signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records.  I'll be posting more about him later today.

Since Cory has been gaining in popularity, it's actually brought Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz back into the booth for a few new recordings.  All three appear on this track "Fat Gold Chain" from Germany's DJ Derezon's album Serious Connexion.  It's actually pretty decent even with the rapping in Germany by Sido.
