Thursday Throwbacks: Keith Murray - "The Most Beautifullest Thing In This World"

"Y'all mythological niggaz is comical
The astronomical is comin through like the flu bombin you
And embalmin in your crew too
With the musical mystical magical, you know how i do
With word attack skills and vocabulary too
My rendition of this edition is all brand new
You're through, i'm inter-planetarian like doctor who (who who?)
So who! (who?)"

That has to be one of the craziest opening lines to a rap song in history.  Just pure lyricism.  When I first heard "The Most Beautifullest Thing In This World" back in '94 my head almost exploded because I had no idea someone could put together such a crazy range of vocabulary and have it all make sense.

Unfortunately, Keith Murray was never able to capture this genius again in quite the same way and he would later simplify his flow and lyrics to the point that he no longer resembled the crazy rhyme spitter that first caught my attention.  His first 2 albums were on point but everything else after that just kind of fell flat.  Even when he was part of Def Squad with Redman and Erick Sermon, it seemed like something was still missing.  I'll always be a fan though, since this is one of those songs that instantly makes me think of the good old days in high school.

T.M.B.T.I.T.W. samples a bunch of old school songs but the most obvious is The Isley Brothers' "Between The Sheets" which you will also recognize as the prominent sample in the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa".  "Between The Sheets" is my shit!

Shaq "Flips Out" Reacting to $35K Fine For Comments About Refs (FUNNY)

Shaq got fined yesterday for comments he made after the game against the Magic on Christmas Day and this is how he reacted.  Dude is nuts!

Here is what he originally said:
“We have two premier big men out there. He is pushing, I’m pushing. Let us play. I guess they [fans] come out to see No. 26 [Delaney] play. He was a great player out there today. They paid all that money to see No. 26 come play. My thing is, if you’re going to call it, call it the same way every time. Don’t pick and choose who you are going to call it against.”

If you've been watching any Celtics games lately, you have noticed that Shaq has been getting screwed on a ton of calls.  Basically, refs are calling fouls on him now for just being big.  I guess when someone runs into him and bounces off of him, it's his fault, even if he's standing straight up.  It's getting a little ridiculous.  I know not every call is going to be correct but at least try and keep it even on both sides of the floor. More often than not, it's the Celtics getting the raw end of the deal.

In related, news Kevin Garnett went down with a leg injury last night and it does not look good, at least based on his reaction.  After the game, Doc and the Celtics made sure that everyone knew it did not seem to be a knee issue and there were no broken bones according to the X-Rays but that's not really what it looked like anyway.

I was under the impression that it was his knee but then they started focusing on his lower leg in the calf area.  If that is the case, I really hope it was only a slight muscle strain and not something more major that could have him sidelined for a long period of time.  I've had the same thing happen to me where I went to jump and my calf cramped up to the point that I was in severe pain but it was OK a few days/weeks later.  I'm hoping that was the case and not something more severe.

It was during the second game of a back to back and they also played on Christmas Day just 3 days earlier so hopefully it was due to dehydration and fatigue and not something else.  If KG is out for a long period of time, that could severely screw the Celtics Championship hopes.  We shall see...

Tyreke Evans Hits a Half Court Game-Winning Buzzer Beater to Beat the Memphis Grizzlies (AWESOME)

This is the best game winning shot I've seen in a long time.  What made it even crazier was the fact that OJ Mayo hit an insane fall away jumper with just 1.5 seconds left to potentially seal the win.  I assume the Kings didn't have any time outs so it's pretty incredible that Tyreke Evans was able to get the inbounds pass and get a decent shot off.  That was unreal.  To quote the announcer:

"IF YOU DON'T LIKE THAT... THEN YOU DON'T LIKE NBA BASKETBALL!!!!!!!!"

Here are the full highlights from the Kings vs. Grizzlies game last night:

Eminem Ft. Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent & Cashis, Stat Quo - "Syllables" (NEW OLD ISH)

I'm pretty sure "Syllables" is an older Eminem track that never saw the light of day even though it features heavy hitters Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.  I'm surprised it didn't get released as an album track considering it's pretty good but sometimes that just happens without any real explanation.  You can tell it's a little older because of Eminem's rhyme style where he was still doing the stupid accents and shit.  It wasn't one of his most annoying flows but it wasn't one of his best either.  He also mentioned TRL which hasn't been on the air for years so there is no way this was made recently.

I actually liked what he was saying in his lyrics though.  He was basically asking whether people actually listen to lyrics anymore or if it's just the infectious beat or hook that they care about.  It's a valid point because of all the crap that makes it to the top of the charts these days.  Lyricism has taken a back seat to a booty shaking beat or some trendy dance or whatever.

Unfortunately, people rarely actually listen to the message so Em felt like calling them out.  I think it's a pretty dope track and it's worth a few listens at least.  It's not often you hear an unreleased track that is actually worth listening to more than once.

Charles Barkley's New T-Mobile NBA Commercial - "Chuck's Remix" (FUNNY)

I haven't even seen this new T-Mobile commercial with Charles Barkley and Dwyane Wade on TV yet but it's already one of my favorites.  Anything involving Charles Barkley these days is an instant win.  The dude is hysterical and it's even better when he gets made fun of to his face and he's OK with it.  This was a great idea and the execution was on point.  Where can I download this song?  I want it!  "I May Be Wrong!  But I Doubt It!"

Snoop Dogg and John Legend - "Do The Peyton Manning Dance" (FUNNY)

I used to hate Peyton Manning with a passion because he was an enemy of the Patriots and he was also a big tool but I've relaxed on that opinion over the years since he's actually pretty funny in all of those goofy commercials.  I can appreciate someone who can be self deprecating or just not take themselves to seriously and he is certainly that.

Kenny Mayne took it to the next level by recruiting Snoop Dogg and John Legend to create a song called "Do The Peyton Manning Dance" for his show/feature "The Mayne Event".  It might be a few years too late based on the fact that they are making fun of all the movements and shakes Peyton does during the game but it's still pretty funny.

Lupe Fiasco - "The Show Goes On" (OFFFICIAL VIDEO)

Lupe Fiasco's new track "The Show Goes On" is probably the best alternative Hip Hop track of 2010.  It's catchy and has cross over appeal, yet it's still Hip Hop to it's core with great lyrics and flow from my man Lupe.  If you're not listening to him at this point, you've got some problems or a really bad taste in music.  The kid has talent and puts out dope music on the regular.

It was rumored that Fiasco was going to retire if he was allowed to release the triple album like he intended but that was squashed due to details of his record contract.  Hopefully that means he will be in the game for a long time because he would leave a huge hole in Hip Hop and the music scene as a whole if he was gone.  He's one of the few creative Hip Hop artists left.

Here's some more details about that rumor and his next album Lasers that comes from his Wikipedia page so take it with a grain of salt.  It sounds legit based on what I've heard in the past though:

"Fiasco was originally going to release his triple album, LupE.N.D. as his third and final record, but his contract with Atlantic Records prevented him from retiring with this agenda. He then postponed LupE.N.D. indefinitely and intended on releasing an album tentatively titled The Great American Rap Album in June 2009.  Instead, the album was also postponed and he announced a new album was in the works, originally titled We Are Lasers and then changed to LasersLasers is an acronym for "Love Always Shines, Everytime Remember 2 Smile".

Lasers is finally scheduled to be released on March 8, 2011.

Best High School Dunk Contest Ever? (IMPRESSIVE)

High School dunk contests can be kind of hit or miss, depending on the crop of athletes in the competition each year.  For some reason, this City of Palms dunk contest had a ridiculous group of dunkers and the event rivals almost any contest that I've ever seen from either college or the NBA.

These kids were pulling off some legit dunks and their creativity was off the charts.  I can't figure out if kids are jumping higher and getting better at dunking or if this was just an anomaly and we may never see anything like it ever again.  Either way, the competition was absolutely NASTY and I wish I saw it live. I was kind of shocked that the 7 foot white dude Marshall Plumlee pulled off the win but his creativity obviously impressed the judges.

Here's the YouTube description:

Christ School's 7-footer Marshall Plumlee, a Duke signee, used a teammate & some creativity to take the title in arguably the STRONGEST FIELD EVER in City of Palms Dunk Contest HISTORY, and maybe any HS dunk contest!!!! Watch every dunk that went down!!! (Deuce Bello, Ike Nwamu, Demetris Morant, Marcus Gilbert, & More)

Michael Jordan "Invincible" Trailer (SICK)

"Invincible" is a short movie about Michael Jordan that LK12Productions (aka some random dude) is putting together for release in 2011. It's only going to be about 20 minutes long supposedly so I'm not sure you can really call it a film considering MJ's career could easily fill up 3 or 4 hours worth of stories and highlights but we'll see how it comes out. I'm always looking for some new MJ related material and it's pretty tough to mess it up so I'll at least wait to see the final product and make a decision then. The trailer looks pretty good so this could have some potential.

adidas Originals 'adicolor Royal' Commercial Ft. "Gone" by Donnis (COOL)

I've been feeling this new adidas commercial for awhile now.  It's just a smooth and simple commercial that highlights all of their Royal shoes and apparel but it also has a dope soundtrack with a song called "Gone" by Donnis.  I didn't know about him before but I'll definitely be looking for his shit from now on.  That's a catchy ass song.

Here's the official video for "Gone" which is also pretty cool.

Another Nasty Blake Griffin Dunk; Plus JR Smith's 360 Layup (SICK)

It seems like a new Blake Griffin dunk is almost a daily occurrence at this point but I just can't get enough of them.   The kid keeps outdoing himself every time.  They just keep getting nastier and nastier.  This one above was incredible because he almost cracked his lip on the rim while having his armpit above the rim at the same time.  Disgusting!

While I was searching for that one, I also came across another nasty alley oop that happened just two days prior.  This one was a 8 or 9 on the difficulty scale because he had to catch it on the run at full speed and then find the rim without killing himself.  The hang was completely necessary or he would have ended up on his head.

This one isn't a dunk but it's just as impressive. JR Smith pulled off an unbelievable 360 layup to score on Tim Duncan in a game last week. Usually I would say it was overkill since a 360 layup is just for show but I actually feel like this one was fairly necessary to get the basket because he might have been blocked otherwise. It was very nice, either way.

Crazy Free Throw: Ball Hangs On Rim Forever (UNREAL)

At first, I thought this video was going to somehow involve the crazy fan in the Superman costume running on the court or trying to fly or some shit but I wasn't even close.  I had no idea it was all about the shot.  I've seen  basketballs sit on the rim for a long time before but I've never seen anything like this free throw from Idaho State's Kamil Gawrzydek.  It felt like an eternity before it finally fell in.  I actually thought it was just going to sit there somehow and they'd have to have someone go up and tip it off.  Crazy!

I guess everyone else agrees because the vid already has 7+ million views since December 21st!  I can almost guarantee you will never see anything like this ever again or at least not any time soon.

Asher Roth - "G.R.I.N.D. (Get Ready It's A New Day)" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

This video for Asher Roth's new single "G.R.I.N.D. (Get Ready It's A New Day)" has been out for a few months now but I forgot to post it up. I feel like this song kind of fell under the radar and didn't get the shine it deserves. It's actually a really nice evolution for Asher. He's talking about some real shit unlike most of the people out there these days. His lyrics are on point and the hook is real solid. I'm surprised this hasn't caught on but it's one of those songs that isn't a great fit for radio so most people will probably never hear it which is too bad because it's a great song. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing Roth's new album The Spaghetti Tree which is set to drop at some point in 2011.

Louisville's 5'10" Peyton Siva Throws Down a Nasty 360 Dunk (MAD HOPS)

You might have caught this clip of Louisville's Peyton Siva throwing down a 360 on SportsCenter earlier this week but I just found the clip now so I thought I would throw it up because it's nasty.  If you couldn't tell, Peyton Siva has some serious hops.  It's hard enough to dunk at 5'10" but to be able to throw down a 360 on the fastbreak is pretty incredible.

Take a look at some of his highlights below.  The kid can jump through the roof.  I'll definitely be on the look out for him next time Louisville is on TV.

And 1 Live Street Ball Is Back (DECENT)

It's been awhile since we've seen the And 1 boys doing their thing but it's nice to see them back on the court with their usual antics.  I can't say that I am super excited about the tour this time around since it's gotten a little played out but it's still fun to catch an episode here and there and see some of the crazy new moves and dunks.  I don't even know if they will have a show again like they did on ESPN a couple of years ago but if they don't, I can't imagine the tour will be as successful.  Maybe that's why they are starting off in a foreign place like the Carribean to give themselves a new audience.

This video had some crazy dunks but unfortunately, I don't really recognize any of the guys other than The Professor.  It looks like he has been working on his moves though.  He was smoking fools out there.  It's nice to see the white boy still doing his thing...

Lil Wayne Performs "6 Foot 7" Live On SNL (COOL)

I have to give Lil Wayne some credit for once.  As much as he annoys me sometimes, the dude sounds dope live.  His recent performance on SNL certainly showcased his skills.  His energy is always at a high level and you can actually understand him unlike most rappers who hold the mic too close to their lips and just mumble their shit to the point that it's incoherent.

"6 Foot 7" is a dope track that is super catchy because of the hook that samples Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O" (Banana Boat).

You might also recognize it from his appearance on The Muppets back in the day:

DeMar DeRozan Posterizes Tyrus Thomas (WITH AUTHORITY)

Not much to say here other than that dunk was NASTY!  DeRozan sucked in the dunk contest a couple of years ago but his in game dunks have been unreal.  Too bad he plays in Toronto and no one really gets to see him play.  It's kind of like when Vince Carter was up there.  It's just a waste of good dunking ability...

Sick Hail Mary Game Winning TD Pass In High School Football Game (WOW)

This play should have never happened but it was pretty nasty regardless.  The defense is always taught to stay home and not leave their assignment until they are absolutely sure it's a run or pass play.  You can see the defense just running back and forth on the field following the QB.  That's why the receiver was so wide open.  That's just bad D.

Anyway, the QB did a great job of keeping the play alive and keeping his head up to find the open receiver.   It happened on 4th & 10 with 2 minutes to go, down 21-20.  Here's the breakdown according to the videos description:

"The 2010 Vikings find themselves down 20-21 with only 2:08 left in the 4th quarter in the CIF Central Section Finals against the undefeated Porterville Panthers. It's 4th and 10 on their own 19 yard line when running back converted to QB Garrett Steele pulls off another amazing play just like at San Luis Obispo which that video has over 1.3 million hits. He finds away to elude the pass rush for 16 seconds, running from one sideline to the other even running to the back of the end zone before launching a 45 yard pass from the 1 yard line on the run to running back Taylor Abernathy."

Here's the other play they were talking about that was eerily similar:

Clinton Sparks Ft. Jermaine Dupri & DJ Class - "Favorite DJ" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

"Favorite DJ" has been out for awhile now so it's strange that they are just releasing a video for it now but I guess it's better late than never.  I think this is one of my favorite DJ related tracks that I've heard in awhile.  It's got a cool club vibe and of course, it's giving props to the DJ which doesn't happen that often these days.  That's an old school concept but I like it.  We need all the props we can get...

Shaquille O'Neal Conducts the Boston Pops (COOL)

I've mentioned numerous times before how Shaq has been all over Boston ever since he got here and his recent appearance at the Boston Pops confirms he doesn't intend to stop anytime soon.   The dude knows how to embrace his celebrity, that's for sure.  The people of Boston certainly love him too.  He can do no wrong.  Just listen to how the Garden explodes every time he scores or dunks.  It feels like it's 2000 or something.  Crazy.

J.R. Smith's Nasty Dunk on Spurs' Gary Neal (SICK)

I know this is almost a week old but I never got a chance to post it last week and it's such a nasty dunk that it needs to be seen by as many people as possible.  J.R. Smith has always been a great in game dunker but I feel like he doesn't get the credit he deserves because he's kind of a punk.  The guy can fly though and every so often you will get a gem like this one.  Dude took off from about the circle and threw it down with two hands on the Spurs Gary Neal (who?) like he was some kid in Jr. High.  On top of that, it was also a buzzer beater, plus he got the foul.  Just nasty!

Smith was also rocking the 'Cool Grey' Air Jordan XI that releases tomorrow, December 23rd.  Nice!

Anthony Pettis' Sick Off The Wall Roundhouse Kick On Ben Henderson (MMA NASTINESS)

I don't really follow any MMA but I do appreciate crazy moves like this one.  That was straight out of a Van Damme movie or something.  Pettis literally ran off the fenced wall to gain momentum and absolutely drilled Henderson with a powerful roundhouse kick.  Nasty!

Danny Woodhead Poses as Modell's Employee to Sell His Own Reebok Jersey (FUNNY)

I think the title explains it all.  Danny Woodhead dressed up as a Modell's employee at a store in MA and tried to get customers to buy his own jersey.  One lady actually thought he was Woodhead but the rest didn't have a clue since he looks like just a regular dude that would work in a store like that.

The funniest part is that almost every single person, including the women, were all taller and larger than him.  I knew Woodhead was small but this video really made it sink in.  It's pretty incredible that he is a successful player in the NFL with his size.  It's not like he is jacked either.  His arms are kind of scrawny.  He literally looks like he is 17 years old!  So crazy.

Desean Jackson's Game Winning Punt Return vs. Giants (CRAZY)

Most punters in the NFL have learned by now not to kick the ball to DeSean Jackson at any time of the game because he is a TD return waiting to happen.  Giants' Punter Matt Dodge obviously didn't get the memo because he kicked it right to Jackson with :12 left on the clock instead of kicking it out of bounds and trying to take the game into OT.  Dodge was supposed to do just that based on Tom Coughlin's reaction after the play.  I kind of feel bad for the dude but he did it to himself.  I can only imagine the beating he took from Coughlin and the team after the game too.  Yikes.

The game itself was a great one too.  The Eagles came back after being 21 points down and pulled off one of the best come from behind wins of the season.  Actually, this might have been the best game of the season so far.

New England Patriots' Right Guard Dan Connolly's Sick Kickoff Return (IMPRESSIVE)

Although the game was a little too close for comfort last night, it was nice to see the Pats pull off the win against the Packers.  The best play of the night had to be Dan Connolly's kickoff return.  He is normally a Right Guard on the offensive line but he also plays on special teams.  He's obviously out there for blocking but the ball came right to him on a squib kick but instead of falling on it like most big guys do, he decided to run it back.  He had some nice blocking but he also made a few nice moves and he actually looked pretty comfortable doing it.  His speed was impressive too and it certainly surprised the shit out of the Packers.  He didn't look half bad out there!

I doubt he ever thought he would have the chance to return a kick for much more than a few yards yet alone run it back 70 yards to about the 4 yard line.  It's too bad he couldn't get it in to the end zone but it was a great play and it allowed the Pats to score a TD a few minutes later.  I can guarantee that will be the best highlight of his career.

Here are the highlights from the game:

Jeremih Ft. 50 Cent - "Down On Me" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

I posted the unofficial video for "Down On Me" a few weeks ago with the "Thing" Keenan and 50 which first appeared on the Chelsea Lately show.  I can't believe that thing has over 13 million views!

I figured it was worth throwing up the official video although somehow, it's just not as entertaining as the other one. They did put together a 3D version of the video which is kind of cool but how many people actually own 3D glasses?  Like a hundred at the most?

White Kid "Shatters" Backboard in High School B-Ball Game (DISAPPOINTING)

Someone sent me the link to this video and I got all fired up thinking it was going to be sick.  It's not often you get to see a white kid throw down a dunk in a high school basketball game, yet alone shatter the backboard so I thought this kid might have redeemed all of us white folks for years of awful dunks.

Unfortunately, I was severely disappointed when I finally saw the video.  The dunk itself was fairly basic but decent enough but the glass didn't really shatter and the whole thing was just severely underwhelming.  The backboard just kind of cracked and stayed all in one place.  Boring!  I want to see glass flying everywhere and the rim fall off on someone's head like the good old days.  I'm not saying I wouldn't be pumped if I did the same thing but I was just expecting more.

I think this YouTube comment summed it up best:

"Title should read, "overweight kid bends rim and cracks glass"  KHII

The video below shows some examples of how you shatter a backboard or just generally destroy one.  This kid has some work to do.

Chicks Hair Catches on Fire at Diddy's Party (HYSTERICAL)

This is freakin' hysterical!  Kevin Hart, Trey Songz and Fabolous are just chillin' with some half naked ladies near the hot tub having a good time and then all of a sudden, the weave on one of the chicks lights on fire.  Awesome.  She's sitting there trying to be all sexy and shit for a good 5 seconds without even knowing it was on fire.  Why didn't she just duck down into the water to put it out?  She's literally in the tub already.  Dummy.

This chick obviously wanted to be famous but I don't think she wanted it to go down like that.  Funniest clip I've seen in awhile...

Since we are already talking about Kevin Hart, I thought I would hit you off with some of his best stand up material.  This guy is funny as hell.

Thursday Throwbacks: The Conscious Daughters - "Somethin' to Ride To (Fonky Expedition)"

I don't have much to say about The Conscious Daughters' "Somethin' to Ride To (Fonky Expedition)" other than this was my shit back in the day.  The song wasn't a huge hit although it was  a West Coast anthem but for some reason they played it on the radio here in Boston for a little bit in '94 and I was addicted.  The Conscious Daughters were part of the "gangsta bitch" era that was introduced by Boss.  These chicks could spit and they could also beat the shit out of anyone that stepped up to them and questioned their skills.  They just don't make female rappers like this anymore.

Here's another version of "Fonky Expedition" which isn't as good as the original above but it still bumps.

James Harden Dunks On JJ Hickson (WITH AUTHORITY)

DAMN!  That was a nasty freakin' dunk by James Harden over JJ Hickson. You can't even give Hickson shit for taking that one to the grill. He made a decent effort at the block but Harden was just coming too strong to the hoop.  No one was stopping that.

Along with being one of the best and most entertaining young teams in the L, the Thunder are also probably one of the best dunking teams in the NBA.  Westbrook, Durant, Green and Harden are all good for at least one nice dunk per game. I love watching these guys play and have considered getting NBA League Pass just for them.

Celtics Beat Knicks on Pierce's Buzzer Beater (GREAT GAME)

If you didn't catch the Celtics/Knicks game last night, you missed a good one.  The Knicks were up most of the game and Amare Stoudemire was a BEAST all game long.  He ended up with 39 points and 10 rebounds and almost responded to Pierce's buzzer beater with one of his own from deep behind the three point line.  Everyone in the building thought they would go for the alley oop to Stoudemire at the rim but instead he stepped out for the jumper.  Luckily, it was well after the buzzer but that was a big scare for a second.

I'll give the Knicks credit though.  They played the C's well and they are definitely a legit team.  Even Pierce and Garnett acknowledged that after the game.  Stoudemire is playing out of his mind and Felton and Gallinari are real nice compliments that are coming into their own as well.  There are a ton of rumors about Carmelo Anthony being traded to the Knicks but some fans have to wonder if that will mess up the chemistry they have going right now.  You make that trade all day when you have  the chance to get another elite player but at least Knicks fans actually have an argument to make for once.

The best part of the game other than Pierce's game winner was the celebration after the shot when Nate Robinson jumped over Pierce and ended up falling on his head.  I thought he broke his arm or neck but luckily he bounced right back like "a little puppy" to quote Tommy Heinsohn.  You gotta love the energy of the little guy. Here's another look at the celebration incident:

Killer Mike Ft. T.I. - "Ready Set Go" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

It's nice to finally hear some new ish from Killer Mike.  He has to be one of the most underrated and slept on rappers in the game today. Dude can flow like a mofo and he's got that Outkast and Dungeon Family influence that brings his creativity to another level.

Unfortunately, he decided to leave Big Boi's Purple Ribbon label but he recently joined up with T.I. and his Grand Hustle label.  "Ready Set Go" is a real solid joint and I think it's a sign of more to come in the near future.  With the help of T.I. and his producers, there's no reason why Killer Mike can't put together another solid album like Monster.

High School Basketball Player Shoves and Tackles Ref During Game (WOW)

This is some crazy shit.  I can't believe someone would be so pissed off at a call that they would tackle the ref.  The dude got pushed by someone on the other team.  If he should have been fighting anyone, it should have been him.  I just can't over the fact that all of the players and people around the incident were so calm and didn't get involved, except for a few coaches and a cop.  I think everyone was so stunned as to what was going on that they were in complete shock.

Here's some more info from the videos description:

"The game ended in forfeit after the player from Desoto High School in Arcadia, FL attacked the referee after being issued a technical foul and was ejected from the game. The player has been banned from all extracurricular school activites according to the coach, suspended till January 10th as of now, and a police report has been filed. Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg & Akon - "Kush" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

Aw shit!  I've been waiting for this video for a few weeks now.  "Kush" is officially my new shit.  I can't get enough of this song.  It's classic Dre all the way.  Now we just need the f'n album!  Come on dude!

I basically gave up and came to terms with the fact that Detox was probably never going to be released.  We've been hearing leaks over the past year(s) so I thought we might just be hearing throwaway joints that didn't make the cut.  It's nice to finally see an official single and video which ensures that we will actually see Detox released sometime soon.  When it finally drops, it is going to be MASSIVE.  We still don't know when that exact date will be but it sounds like February 2011 is the official time frame.  It was supposed to be December 2010 so take that with a grain of salt but it's definitely coming!  Thank God.

A "Message To All The Wanna Be DJ's!" Funny Cartoon (PLUS A DJ RYB RANT)

This video might not be that funny to everyone out there but if you are a DJ or know one, you can definitely relate to it.  I can't remember how many times during my DJ career that I had someone come up to me and say some stupid shit like this.  People think DJ'n is just as simple as pressing a button and you don't need any skill or practice to be good at it.  That is really frustrating and annoying to hear because it took me years to perfect my craft and learn how to rock a crowd.  Even to this day, I am still learning new techniques and improving every day.

Back when I was spinning in the clubs on a regular basis, we didn't have easy access to all of these DJ programs like Serato and Traktor Scratch.   The original versions of these progams were starting to pop up but they were mad expensive and also weren't very consistent.  I stuck with vinyl and CD's up until just a few years ago when I finally decided to pull the trigger and get Traktor.  We also had to manually figure out the BPM of a song in order to know what other song to use for beat matching.  I had to literally tap out on my leg what the general beat of the song was and make a guesstimate on the BPM.  Shit is ridiculous now that I think about it!

On top of that, I had to lug all of my records and CD's (and sometimes my own equipment) to the gig and even though it sucked ass at the time, it was a good experience.  It made me think about whether or not all of that effort was worth it to be a DJ and the answer was a resounding yes.  Once you got the crowd moving and had them in the palm of your hands, it was possibly one of the best highs you could ever feel.  It was a power trip. There was nothing like going from an empty to a packed dance floor by playing the right song and then keeping them out there the rest of the night because you kept making great decisions on the playlist.  I would never plan what I was going to play ahead of time because I liked to feel the vibe of the crowd first.  Once I knew what they were into and what it took to get them going, that's when I would start to access that catalog of related songs I had memorized.
It could suck when someone made a request because you had to go digging for it and hope that you had the song on hand.  You couldn't just do a quick text search or even download the song in an instant if you didn't have it.  I think the process actually helped my memory a ton because I could find any song within a minute or two and usually before the current song ended. I had to memorize 4 books of CD's and two crates of vinyl or otherwise I would have been lost.  It's kind of crazy that I was able to pull that off looking back at it now.

As most of you know, bitches are crazy in general but when you are a DJ, it's on another level.  They aren't afraid to make multiple requests (more like demands) and they always want their song played NOW.  As much as I wanted to flip out on their ignorant impatient asses, I would have to deal with it and play their stupid requests pretty quickly or I would risk losing the crowd.  If the girls aren't dancing, neither are the guys. I didn't want a group of 10 or more hot chicks leaving the club all at the same time.  That doesn't sound like a lot but when you are in a small venue, that's not a good look.  It was hard enough to get them in the door in the first place so your job is to keep them there by all means necessary.  Girls are crazy enough to pay a $10 cover charge and then leave 3 songs later because they don't like what's being played.  It's sounds ridiculous but it's true.

You learn real quickly that sometimes you have to bit your tongue and just play a shitty song that you don't really want to hear or might even hate because it's been so overplayed but you gotta do it.  There are too many DJ's out there that only play what they want to hear with no consideration for the ladies.  Dudes don't dance unless chicks are on the dance floor so you need to play what they like and stay away from the thugged out shit, at least until later in the night.  Once you get them out there and they're drunk enough, you can eventually play whatever you want as long as it's reasonable.  Believe me, I've gone from super poppy shit like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga right into some nasty shit like Akinyele's "Put it In Your Mouth" or Eazy-E's "Gimme Dat Nut" and it worked.  You just have to know when the time is right.

So this long rant is basically my advice to all of the young and aspiring DJ's out there. I have no problem with people wanting to become a DJ and utilize all of the new technology available but don't think that you are going to be a superstar from day one.  It takes a lot of hard work and practice, mixed in with some stress and frustration. It's a learning process and just know that you will never be perfect.  You will always play a song that you think is just right but someone will complain about it later.  You can't please everyone but if you finish the night knowing that most of the place was satisfied then you've done your job.

Expect more DJ related rants from me in the near future.  This whole post just set me off and helped me remember a ton of other shit that I'll save for another day...

Marching Band Forms Giant Kicker During Halftime Show (IT'S GOOD!)

Marching bands are usually pretty lame but once in awhile you come across a band that either plays some new Hip Hop or does something cool like this.  I believe this was the University of Hawaii's marching band that pulled off the giant field goal kicker during their halftime performance of the UH vs. USC game back in September .  Mad props for creativity and pulling off the animation.  Very impressive.

The entire halftime performance is in this video below:

Fabolous - 'You Be Killin Em' Starring Amber Rose (DOPE)

Fabolous finally dropped a video for his dope single 'You Be Killin' Em' that has been out there for a few months now.  It was defintiely worth the wait though since it stars Amber Rose's fine ass.  Yes, she is only famous because she dated Kanye but with a body like that, who cares.  Show me more.  That's all I have to say.

'You Be Killin' Em' is off of the Loso's Way 2 album that has been pushed back to March 2011 but is also available on the There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music Mixtape

Here's another version of the video in case the top one gets taken down....

And here are some pics of Amber Rose looking all hot in minimal clothing:

NBA's Top 10 Dunks for November (SICK)

I just stumbled across this video of the NBA's Top 10 Dunks of November and it's nasty!  I can't believe all of these dunks happened in just the first month of the season.  Of course, Blake Griffin holds it down at the #1 & #2 spots.  He may end up having the Top 10 dunks of the season all by himself once everything is said and done.  Dude is a BEAST!

Video of Metrodome Collapsing From Heavy Snow (CRAZY)

You may have seen this video of the Metrodome collapsing yesterday during the Sunday NFL games but it's still worth another look because it's unbelievable.  It almost looks fake like there was some kind of CGI used or something.  Thank God they didn't have anybody inside at the time or there could have been some serious injuries or even deaths. They aren't going to be playing games in the Metrodome any time soon, that's for sure.  Crazy.

B.o.B - "The Watchers" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

B.o.B. is on some other shit with the song and video for "The Watchers" but I'm definitely feeling it.  It's kind of a "wake up!" type of message which is cool since most songs these days no longer make you think but instead just make you dumber.  I love how eclectic B.o.B. is with his style and subject matter.  Hopefully his creativity and willingness to go outside the box will help spawn a new generation of artists that actually say something of value instead of rapping and singing about the same old shit...

Shaq Plays 'Michael Jackson: The Experience' Game For the Wii at Roxbury Boys & Girls Club

Shaq recently gave out gifts to the kids of the Roxbury Boys and Girls Club of Boston and also entertained them by playing the new Michael Jackson: The Experience game for the Nintendo Wii. As part of the "Experience the Glove" campaign, Shaq will be wearing and auctioning off an exact model of Michael Jackson's famous glove for charity at CharityBuzz.com.

Shaq has always said that he's a huge MJ fan so it's cool getting to see him play the game for the first time.  He even did a random tribute to Beat It last summer:

I figured this would be a good time to throw up some other classic Shaq dancing moments:

Celtics Beat 76ers on KG's Last Second Alley-Oop from Rondo (SICK)

I actually feel asleep before the end of the game last night so I am just seeing KG's game winning alley oop from Rondo for the first time.

I'm so f'n pissed I missed this live!  The game should have never been this close but it was the second game of a back to back plus Shaq was out with a calf issue so they were very thin at Center.

I guess it's a little understandable that the C's let the 76ers hang around but it's also nice to see them still pull off the win.  If this was last season, they would have certainly lost this game but the team looks so much better this season and is finally closing out games they are supposed to win.

On the sneaker related front, Nate Robinson once again wore the Air Jordan II "Candy" Green joins which are extremely loud but very nice.

Thursday Throwbacks: Paperboy - "Ditty"

Yezzir! I love this damn song.  Even to this day I can spit back every single word like it was 1992 all over again.  "Ditty" was the shit back in the day.  It was one of the most infectious songs out at the time and it was just pop friendly enough that it crossed over to become a huge hit.

Occasionally during an Old School DJ set, I would throw this on and everyone would go nuts.  It's not as overplayed as some of the other Old School Hip Hop songs like "Humpty Dance" or "Baby Got Back" so it always got everyone fired up and out on the dance floor. You gotta love joints like that.

One little hidden gem about this song is the double lyrics.  If you listen close enough, you can hear Ditty doubling his voice with two separate recordings which isn't a new concept but the cool part is every so often at the end of a line he says a different word than on the first recording.  The most obvious one is in the third verse when he goes "You ain't seen/heard a damn thing."  I thought that was cool as shit back in the day.

Also, I didn't realize this until just now but the song samples Zapp & Roger's "Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)".  Dope!  You gotta love that old school funk.

Slim Thug ft. B.o.B - "So High" (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

"So High" has been floating around for the past few months but I just saw the video today so I thought I would throw it up.  I've been hearing this a lot on Sirius|XM in the past few weeks and it's definitely grown on me.

I liked the song when it first came out but I thought it had some flaws or was missing al little something but I've come around on it now that I've heard it a bit more and I'm sold.  It's definitely one of the best R&B flavored mid tempo joints out there right now.  Plus anything B.o.B. jumps on lately ends up being a hit so I fully expect this to make a slow burn up the charts.
