Boston Sports Wrap Up - (10.21.08)

The song above is from JAM'N 94.5's morning Sports Rap Up by Akrobatik. I kind of hate listening to this station even though they play Hip Hop because they play the same songs over and over again and the morning show is horrendous. I do like the Rap Up once in awhile, though. Akrobatik is one of the sickest underground rappers from Boston and it's pretty incredible how quickly he can put this all together and tell a story about the latest in the Boston sports scene.

I couldn't put together any rationale thoughts on the Red Sox loss Sunday night and I am just finally starting to come down to a sane level. To be honest, I am surprised they even made it to Game 7, so I have to give them props there. I just don't understand what happened to the offense for the better part of this series. Big Papi looked old and hurt, Varitek was completely useless and was an auto out except for that one HR and the solid starters who they rely on (Beckett, Lester) got shelled in the biggest games. Damn. I guess Sox fans can't get too angry since they just won it all last year and there is a 5 year grace period before you can get pissed at them again but you never like to see the season end at the hands of a young ass team that has never even been in the playoffs before and to a city that needs cowbells, dancers and piped in music to get pumped up. That was a tough pill to swallow.

The Pats looked solid last night for the first time in weeks. The defense was unreal for once which is going to be needed for the rest of the season if they are going to stay competitive. Rodney Harrison going out with a serious knee injury for the rest of the year does not help the cause. The running game looked solid to help the offense and open up the passing game a little bit. Cassel didn't throw a ton because he didn't really need to but when the running game is in effect like that, it makes his job that much easier. Moss looked rejuvenated again because he was getting the ball often. These are all good signs for the rest of the season so let's hope they can use this game as a springboard to bigger and better things each week.

Finally, there was some slightly disappointing news from the Celtics as they announced Darius Miles was released yesterday. It's not so much that I was upset he was sent packing because he was such a great player or that he was even needed by this team but he would have been a decent addition for height and athleticism. Plus, it's always nice to see a redemption story by an athlete who was written off as a knucklehead and troublemaker. He showed some signs of maturity and looked like he was willing to do anything to make it back in the L after a major knee injury. I hope he gets picked up by a team at some point this season and maybe even the C's can grab him later in the year if he is around and they have some holes with injuries. He seems like a decent guy that got a bad rep early in his career when he was in the wrong place at the wrong time quite often. Everyone deserves a second chance if they smarten up and I think he is ready. Good luck D. Miles.

On a more positive note, Gabe Pruitt has been playing great in the ever increasing minutes he has been given this preseason.  From the games I have watched so far, he looks much more comfortable and confident out there making plays and taking open shots.  I am looking for him to do big things this season as Cassell's playing time should decrease and open up more room for GP or at least that's what I am hoping...
