Thursday Throwbacks: Ghostface Killah - "Daytona 500"

Oh shit!  I haven't dropped any old school Wu in awhile so I thought I'd hit you off with one of my favorites from the solo album collection.  Ghostaface Killah's "Daytona 500" is probably one of the best Wu related singles of all time but it always seems to fall under the radar when the discussion comes up for some reason.

It wasn't one of those tracks that was on the charts for long so maybe people just forget about it but I think it deserves some more respect.  It's one of the rawest joints I've ever heard and it gets me fired up as soon as I hear that first bass line.  Ghostface, Raekwon and Cappadonna also bring some of their best lyrical game that I've ever heard from all three.  Just perfection all around.

The video was on some other shit, using only clips from the Speed Racer cartoon and syncing up with the characters to make it look like they were rapping.  I don't think many artists could get away with a video like this these days other than maybe the Gorillaz of coursesince they are technically just animated characters.  Artists are too concerned with their faces being seen at all times and can't let the music speak for itself because it usually sucks.  Whoever came up with this concept was a genius because it works perfectly with the song and theme.

The main sample in the song is from Bob James' "Nautilus".  Even the original is kind of hot!
