Random iPod Track of the Week - Beenie Man "Who Am I"

Sim Simma
Who got de keys to my bimma
Who am I de girls dem sugar
How can I mek luv to ah fella in ah rush pass meh de keys to my truck
Who am I de girls dem lock
And I and I we make love to precious but...

That's that shit! This is such a classic Dancehall tune. I was in college when this came out and it was played at every party for about 3 straight years. All of the girls loved shaking their asses to this one. Even though most people couldn't understand what the hell Beenie Man was saying (we still don't!), they could always chant along with the "Sim Simma, Who got the keys to my Bimma"!!!

As with most hit Reggae and Dancehall tracks, "Who Am I" was released more than a year before it became a hit in the U.S. It first dropped in 1997 and was a UK Top 40 hit but it wasn't until 1998 that the U.S. finally caught on. If you were up on your Dancehall, you knew about this track for awhile but there weren't many people (especially white folk) that were into this style of music back then. Funny enough, it was a tiny little white girl that asked me if I had this track when I was DJ'n at the club one night. She went on and on about how much she loved the track and told me I just HAD TO GET IT.  I figured if she was this passionate about this song, I had to at least do a little research and give it a listen.

It took me a couple of weeks to find the album because the single had not been released yet (at least in Boston). This was well before internet downloading and even before any real online purchasing so I literally had to go digging in the crates from store to store in various locations across Massachusetts.  I looked every freakin' where!  The Reggae section in most stores was either wack or just didn't exist but luckily Tower Records on Newbury St. had a humongous World music section so I was able to finally snag a copy.

I think that is one of the main reasons why I love this track so much.  I had to put in some major effort to find it but once I finally got my hands on it, all of that madness paid off. I fell in love with the track because it was dope as hell and every time I played it the crowd went nuts. The fact that I was one of the first local DJ's to know about or have this track made it that much crazier for me. There was a certain swagger that went along with having exclusive tracks back then. Now you can just download a track at any time and can even have it in your hands minutes after it's been released or even completed.  I love that instant gratification but the fun of the search for the " buried treasure" is no longer there.

Due to the wonders of YouTube, I was able to find the ORIGINAL video for "Who Am I".   It doesn't get more ghetto than this.  Seriously. I mean WTF is this big ass dude doing in the beginning to that poor girl?  That must be the molestation dance the Jamaicans practice up in the clubs.  I've just never seen it in broad daylight!  Does he think that's sexy?  That shit is scary!

If you've ever been to Jamaica (specifically Negril), this will give you some flashbacks which may not necessarilly be a good thing if you are a good looking lady (or even an ugly one!) or a dude that had your money stolen by a dude with a machette (true story). I was bugging out while I was watching this thinking back to all the madness that ensued on Spring Break in 1999.  Those dudes just didn't give a F$#k!  They would basically be dry humping the shit out of a girl on the dance floor like they were the only ones there.  It was wild!  Now that I am thinking about it, I made it on an episode of MTV's The Grind with Eric Neis! Ha Ha! Classic.

$500K Halfcourt Shot Prank - Serious PWNAGE (FUNNY)

These College Humor dudes are ruthless!  Thank God I do not have any friends that are willing to go out of there way to embarrass the S#!* out of me in front of 15K sports fans.  Well, at least I hope I don't have any D-Bag friends that would be willing to make me look like this big of an A-hole!  I think I would rip their hearts out through their chest Mortal Kombat style if they tried to pull this ish.  You've been warned, fools!

Anyway, this is definitely one of the best set ups I have ever seen and the whole video is funny as hell.  I definitely got the douche chills halfway through as the antcipation was building.  This guy "Streeter" (WTF kind of name is that by the way?) went a long way to make everything happen and even got a sponsorship from Axe Body Wash!!!  That's how you do it!  Amir got PWNED!!!

Ridiculous Windmill Dunk by the Clippers Mike Taylor (WHO?)

HOLY S%!T!  That is one of the best in game dunks of the season right there!  I think I say that every time I post a new one but it seems like they just keep getting better and better.  It's hard enough to do a baseline double pump windmill in general but to pull this off in traffic during an NBA game is absolutely insane.

I saw this the dunk other day on SportsCenter the other day and thought it was Al Thornton or some one else I've actully heard of on the crappy Clippers but it turns out it was their 2008 second round pick and D-League call up Mike Taylor.  Wow.  That's how you make the most of your time in the L, my man!  Keep throwing it down like a monster and you will earn yourself a lot more startsSICK!

Lil Wayne - "Prom Queen" (Official Video)

Did you know Lil Wayne was releasing a ROCK album?  Yup. It's crazy but true. Weezy was so bored with killin' the rap game that he decided he wanted to tackle rock music. He has always been very open about his interest in all kinds of music, especially rock, so this makes some sense. It is still tough to imagine someone at the top of their game deciding to switch genres "just for the hell of it" though.

Rappers like Ice-T, Cypress Hill, Jay-Z and many others have released rock singles or albums in the past but it was usually when they were looking to spark some new interest in their music after they had fallen off a bit. Jay-Z was the exception because he was just messing around with Linkin Park on that mashup album and still sold a ton of records. Lil Wayne is dropping this after dropping the best selling "The Carter 3" just last year. That takes some balls but he "just don't give a F%#k" apparently.

I pretty much hated this song at first.  I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I can get down with rock but I just couldn't get past the fact that it was Weezy singing about a "Prom Queen" while playing the guitar. After a few more listens and trying to forget who made the track, I have to admit, I actually like this song. It's definitely something you would hear on any typical rock station these days and the melody is definitely good. I'm sure a lot of hardcore rock fans would have a lot of criticism and could pick it apart but you have to admit it's decent.

The new album is called "The Rebirth" and is currently scheduled to drop on May 19, 2009. I'm not sure I will buy the whole thing but I will definitely check it out.

Flo Rida ft. Kesha - "Right Round" (Official Video)

Flo Rida's new single "Right Round" is blazing up the charts.  I had a feeling this would be a pretty big commercial hit but I didn't expect it to catch on this quickly.  It's a really good uptempo club track and it's catchy as hell with the interpolation of the 80's hit "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive.
I thought it was kind of random that Flo-Rida chose to "remix" the hook from a fruity 80's dance song since it is a little suspect but once you listen to the words, it starts to make sense why he did it.  It's simple but effective:

Flo Rida
You spin my head right round, right round
When you go down, when you go down down
Kesha
You spin my head right round, right round
When you go down, when you go down down

Flo Rida absolutely CRUSHES this beat with his crazy quick and razor sharp flow.  That's on some Twista level ish!  Very impressive.  Expect this track to be on the charts for a long time just like "Low" and "Elevator" were on his last album.  The guy has found his niche with the club hits for the ladies and he just keeps putting out hits.  That's how you do it!

NaS ft. Marsha Ambrosius - "If I Ruled the World 2009" (NEW ISH)

I'm not a huge fan of remaking classic tracks but Nas just did a dope update of his own hit "If I Ruled the World".  It's not as good as the original but I do like it a lot and will defintiely put this in rotation.  The beat is fairly upbeat but relaxing and chill at the same time.  Nas is on point as always with his lyrics and Marsha Ambrosious (one half of the group Floetry) does a real good job with the hook.  Lauyrn Hill's version is a little better but I think that is because I am so used to hearing the original.  Marsha Ambrosius has a great voice and serves it justice and gives the track her own style.  Dope track.  I give it 9 out of 13 bottles...

Terrell Owens Released by Dallas Cowboys (WOW)

I guess we should have seen this coming but it's still crazy to hear that the Dallas Cowboys have officially released Terrell Owens. After owner Jerry Jones stating that there would not be any major moves on numerous occasions, this is a shocking move by Dallas. T.O. must be a serious team cancer if they are willing to cut someone with his talent and still have to pay up to $10 million of his contract to do so.  Things must be even worse than everyone realized.

It's hard to think of a team that is willing to take a risk on Owens at this point in his career. He is getting older and although he can still get it done, his production has been dropping lately.  Regardless of his age though, he is still one of the best receivers in the league.  It's his emotional baggage that is the main issue.  Almost every other team in the NFL has the alpha dog receiver and bringing in T.O. could seriously hurt the chemistry of the team and the ego of the other receivers.  They all love being the man and can't handle when someone comes in to challenge them for that status. You just know there would be a fight or an issue about 5 games into the season when one of them wasn't getting enough passes. It's just a recipe for disaster.

On paper, it would be great to see Randy Moss AND Terrell Owens on the New England Patriots.  Imagine that?!?!  That would be the best receiver combo in history.  Althought he Pats coaching staff and management has been able to keep Moss in check so far, it might just be too much to deal with both of them.  I think Moss always got a bad rep and isn't as bad as people made him out to be but I think T.O. is certifiably crazy.  I don't think anyone can keep that guy in check.

I'm sure Brady would love having both of these guys in single coverage all game long because he would be sitting in the pocket making easy passes all game long.  But there is no way in hell this could work, unfortunately.  We can't have someone like T.O. pouting on the sidelines and trying to be "the show" like he does everywhere else that he has ever played. Can you see him trying to yell at Brady and/or Belichick like he did with Romo and past coaches?  There's no f'n way!  They would knock his ass out in two seconds.

Actually, maybe it could work.  The Patriots might be one of the only teams that could bring his ego back down to earth if they can convince him it might be one of his only remainng chances to win a Super Bowl ring.  It will be interesting to see where this goes in the next couple of weeks.
